Balat: Colors, Stories, and Faiths
Our first stop is Sveti Stefan Bulgarian Church (also known as the Iron Church), Built entirely of cast iron in the 19th century, this remarkable structure is a striking example of the technical and cultural exchange between Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
We then walk through Balat’s famous colorful streets. These houses reflect the neighborhood culture of the Ottoman period, where different communities lived side by side. We take photo breaks to capture this unique atmosphere.
Our next stop is the impressive Fener Rum Lisesi. Built in the 19th century, this institution was one of the most important centers of education and cultural life for the Greek community of the Ottoman Empire.
Nearby, we stop at the vibrant colorful stairs—one of Istanbul’s most “Instagram-friendly” spots—for a short photo break.
One of the highlights of our tour is the Fener Rum Patrikhanesi. As the spiritual center of the Orthodox world, this complex represents a religious continuity from the Byzantine era to the present day. Here, we also discuss its historical connections with the Catholic world.

Eminönü: The Heart of Trade
We return to Eminönü by tram and step into Istanbul’s commercial past.
First, we stroll through historic streets where the traditional Ottoman bazaar culture is still alive today. Then, we visit the elegant Rüstem Paşa Camii, famous for its exquisite Iznik tiles. Commissioned by Rüstem Pasha, the son-in-law of Suleiman the Magnificent, it is considered one of the finest examples of classical Ottoman architecture.
Afterward, we explore a historic commercial structure such as Balkapanı Hanı, representing the traditional caravanserai culture. These hans once served as key hubs where merchants stayed and stored their goods.
One of the liveliest stops of our tour is the Mısır Çarşısı. As we walk among spices, Turkish delights, and exotic scents, we discuss the Ottoman Empire’s role in global trade and its connections with Italian cities such as Venice.
